Can we as society be un-influenced my media?

Some Question... I'd love to here how other people think about this issue

Are we do surrounded by media that it is impossible to be influenced by it?
Or If we are aware of it's impact are we more or less influenced by it?
Does media have a direct affect on your or an indirect affect?
When are we not affected by media? Is it possible to be not affected by media, ever?
Why does media have such a strong impact on our general society?
Are we driven by drama and headlines?
Can we use media in our art to affect others? By doing so are we selling ourselves out? Are we then being used by media rather than us using media?

Wow. You have so many great questions, I would love to answer them all, but I can't. I think many answers to questions are subjective and based on each individual. I will try to reply the best way I know how.

I personally don't think that many people in our society today can escape the affects of media, even if you are homless and don't have access to a tv or computer you still see billboards and newspapers every day, you see the images even if you can read. You see the fashions people wear, and clothing shops. Even if that's not important to your survival at the moment, you might still aspire to have and own some of these things, and the accotiations that come with them. These clothes or newspapers, which are considered to be media or indirect media such as fashion.

I don't think in our society that we are not ever affected by media, everyone seems to be affected directly or indirectly. I believe some people are driven by headlines and drama, others can filter some of this stuff out that they don't condider important to thier lives like fires in people's houses that you don't know, or Britney Spears' Birthday (when is her Birthday anyway?) I think that people do have the ability to mindfully pick and choose what they pay attention to, and consider important in their lives.

I also think that many times when you are not constantly on the alert (nobody is) and passivley absorb media (especially repetive media) you can be indirectly influenced by media.

Aren't one the points of art making besides enjoyment and self-expession, communication? Isn't communication of an idea or a feeling a major part of art making? Even if I make a painting or a sculpture (which is not considered media) and it is seen by an audience, considered to be affecting others, in some small way? Is making art that may be seen by an audience considered to be selling out?

I also think that it is a cycle, when it comes to being used by media and using it, I may be consumed by an AD for a new pair of shoes and buy them, but I also had the power to create an AD just like that, by using my knowledge about media.
The bottom line is that I think that nothing can really be truly defined, especially as good or bad, even in the case of media, it's all subjective and it's all in the way you think about it.
